Ventureora is funded by affiliate commission and advertising. This page sets out the wall between that money and what we recommend, so you can judge our work knowing exactly how it is paid for.
The rule that governs everything else. No brand can buy a place in a roundup, a badge, a score or a better ranking. Not with advertising spend, not with a higher commission rate, not with free product, not with anything. If that ever changes, this page changes first.
How we choose what to recommend
Every product we write about is entered into our own specification database with the same fields as its competitors, drawn from manufacturer documentation, retailer listings and our own measurements where we have the product in hand.
Recommendations come out of comparing those fields against a stated use case, not out of a general impression. A tent recommended for a family of six is recommended because of its floor area per person, peak height and rainfly coverage, and the guide says so. Where a pick has a weakness, we publish the weakness in the same breath as the recommendation.
A product is excluded when we cannot verify its specifications, when the listing looks manipulated, or when we judge it unsafe. Exclusion is never a commercial decision.
Our two testing labels
- Tested by Ventureora. We obtained the product and used it. The review states what we did, for how long and in what conditions, and shows our own photographs and measurements.
- Spec-compared. We have not used the product. It has been scored against every comparable item in our database on verified specifications.
We never imply hands-on experience we do not have. If a guide contains no tested products, it says so at the top.
How this content is produced
Guides are researched from primary sources: manufacturer specification sheets, official documentation, standards where they exist, and our own use of the product. We use software to assemble and compare specifications at scale, because comparing hundreds of products by hand is how errors get in. Every published recommendation, verdict and trade-off is reviewed by a person before it goes live, and that person is accountable for it.
Affiliate relationships
Many outbound links to retailers are affiliate links. If you buy through one, the retailer pays us a commission. You pay exactly the same price either way.
We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising programme designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. We also take part in Amazon’s associates programmes for the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Canada and Australia, which are listed in full in our Affiliate Disclosure. We may join other retailer and network programmes, and the same rules apply to all of them.
Commission rates differ between products and categories. We do not rank by commission, we do not weight scores by payout, and the people writing our guides work from the specification data, not from a rate card. Our Affiliate Disclosure covers the mechanics in detail.
Advertising on this site
We display advertising supplied by third-party networks, including Google. Those networks decide which individual ads you see, based on their own systems and on your advertising settings, not on any arrangement with us.
What advertisers can do here: buy display inventory, at published rates, in defined positions.
What advertisers cannot do here: influence a review, a ranking, a score or a badge; see our editorial work before publication; demand the removal or alteration of a negative verdict; or have their competitors excluded.
Advertising is visually distinct from editorial content and is labelled where labelling is required. If you ever see an ad you believe is deceptive or inappropriate, please report it to us through our contact page and we will pass it to the network.
Sponsored content and gifted product
We do not currently publish sponsored posts. If that ever changes, any sponsored item will carry a clear label at the top of the page, before the content, and every outbound link in it will be tagged as sponsored.
We do not accept payment for reviews, for inclusion in a roundup, or for a link. Unsolicited samples may be accepted for testing and are disclosed on the page. Accepting a sample buys a brand nothing beyond the possibility of being tested honestly, and a sample never has to be returned in a state that flatters it.
Corrections and updates
Guides carry a date, and we revisit them when a product range changes, a recommendation stops being true, or a reader shows us we got something wrong.
When a correction changes a fact, we fix it and note the change on the page. When a correction changes a recommendation, we say what changed and why. We do not silently swap out a pick and pretend it was always there.
