What each finder helps you decide
What size tent do I need?
Tent capacity ratings are tight. Across the 50 tents in our database, rated capacity works out to about 15 to 16 square feet per person, which is roughly one sleeping pad each with no room for bags. If you want space for gear, cots or a restless child, size up by two: a family of four is usually more comfortable in a six-person tent. Open the Tent Finder
| Rated capacity | Average floor area | Range in our database | Average peak height |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-person | 32 sq ft | 25–36 sq ft | 44 in |
| 4-person | 59 sq ft | 54–67 sq ft | 57 in |
| 6-person | 93 sq ft | 80–125 sq ft | 74 in |
| 8-person | 149 sq ft | 117–180 sq ft | 78 in |
How many lumens do I need for camping?
For lighting inside a tent, 100 to 300 lumens is plenty. For a picnic table or a group campsite, look for 300 to 1,000 lumens with a low mode, because runtime on low matters more than peak brightness on a long night. The light finder weighs brightness, runtime, weight and water resistance for lanterns, flashlights, headlamps and string lights. Open the light finder
Air mattress, sleeping pad, cot or sleeping bag?
Car campers usually sleep best on an air mattress or cot, backpackers need a light sleeping pad, and anyone camping on cold nights needs insulation underneath as well as a warm bag. The Sleep Setup Finder asks who is sleeping, how you camp and how cold your nights get. Open the Sleep Setup Finder
Which camp stove, cooler or coffee maker fits my trip?
How many people you cook for and how long you stay out decide most camp kitchen choices, from burner count to how many days a cooler needs to hold ice. Open the Camp Kitchen Finder
Which camping chair is right for me?
Comfort, packed size, weight and how much weight the chair holds pull in different directions. The Camp Chair Finder ranks chairs on the trade-off you care about most. Open the Camp Chair Finder
What size power station do I need for camping?
Phones and lights need a small power bank or station; a 12V fridge or CPAP needs far more capacity; coffee makers and other appliances need high output as well. The Power & Comfort Finder starts from what you want to run, and also covers camping fans and tent heaters. Open the Power & Comfort Finder
Camping this fall? Start here
Fall trips mean longer nights, colder mornings and more rain. These shortcuts open a finder with the right answer already picked:
- Lights that last through long nights: ranked for runtime first.
- Sleep setups for near-freezing nights: insulation counts before comfort.
- Tents for heavy rain: rainfly coverage and waterproof ratings first.
How we rank gear
Every finder scores products on published specs such as floor area, lumens, runtime, insulation, capacity and weight. Each product is compared only with others of the same type, and your answers change how much each spec counts. Products we have used ourselves carry a Tested by Ventureora badge; the rest are marked Spec-compared. We show price bands instead of exact prices because Amazon prices change daily. Read how we test and compare gear.
Camping gear finder FAQ
Yes. Every finder is free and needs no sign-up or email. Your answers are logged anonymously, without your IP address, so we can see which gear people look for.
It scores each product on published specs, compares it only with products of the same type, and weights each spec by your answers. Your best match comes with the reasons it fits and its main trade-off.
Most families of four are more comfortable in a six-person tent. Rated capacity allows about 15 to 16 square feet per person, so a four-person tent leaves little room for bags or cots. Six-person tents in our database average 93 square feet, against 59 for four-person tents.
Six-person tents in our database average 93 square feet of floor, ranging from 80 to 125 square feet, with an average peak height of 74 inches, which is tall enough for most adults to stand.
Amazon prices change often, so a fixed number would quickly be wrong. Each pick shows a price band from $ to $$$$, and the Check price button shows today’s price.
